The North Carolina first-90-days checklist

None of this is interesting. All of it becomes a problem if you leave it. Here's the sequence, with the deadlines that are actually enforced.

The single thing most people get wrong: North Carolina gives you 60 days from establishing residency to get a state driver's licence, and your vehicle registration depends on having that licence first. So the order matters — licence, then registration. People who do it the other way round make two trips.

First two weeks

• ☐ Utilities on before you arrive. Electricity, water, gas, internet. Internet installation is the one with a waiting list — book it the day you sign the lease, not the day you move in.
• ☐ Mail forwarding with USPS. Do it a few days before the move, not after.
• ☐ Update your address with your bank, employer, insurers, and anywhere holding a subscription with a card on file.
• ☐ Find the nearest urgent care and save it in your phone. You will not want to be searching for this at the moment you need it.

Inside 60 days — the ones with real deadlines

• ☐ North Carolina driver's licence. 60 days from establishing residency. Make an appointment — walk-in waits at NCDMV offices are notorious, and appointments at popular offices book out. Bring proof of identity, Social Security number, two proofs of residency, and your out-of-state licence.
• ☐ Vehicle registration and title. Requires the NC licence first. You'll need a safety inspection — and in Wake County an emissions inspection too — before the plate is issued. Note that the trigger can come sooner than 60 days if you take a job here, so if you're employed, treat this as urgent rather than eventual. Confirm your own timeline directly with the NCDMV — this is the one requirement where the answer genuinely depends on your circumstances.
• ☐ Vehicle insurance switched to an NC policy. Required before registration. North Carolina requires liability coverage from a carrier licensed in the state, so an out-of-state policy generally won't satisfy it.
• ☐ Voter registration. Handled through the county board of elections, and you can do it at the DMV while you're there for the licence. Registration deadlines fall about 25 days before an election, so check the calendar rather than assuming.

First 90 days — the ones that only hurt later

• ☐ Primary care doctor. New-patient waits can run months. Get on a list now, even if you feel fine — that's the entire point.
• ☐ Dentist, and a vet if you have animals. Same reasoning, same waits.
• ☐ Transfer prescriptions to a local pharmacy.
• ☐ School enrolment, if you have kids. Wake County uses an assignment system rather than simple neighbourhood zoning, and it surprises nearly every family that arrives. Do not assume the closest school is your school. Verify the assignment for your exact address before you sign anything.
• ☐ Understand the tax picture. North Carolina has a flat state income tax and counties levy annual property tax on both real estate and registered vehicles — the vehicle tax arrives with your registration renewal and catches new arrivals off guard every year.
• ☐ Find your polling place, your library branch, and your recycling day. Small, and they make somewhere start feeling like home.

The two that catch almost everybody

The vehicle property tax. Most states don't have one. North Carolina bills it alongside your registration renewal, so the first renewal costs meaningfully more than you budgeted. It isn't a mistake and it isn't a scam — it's just a line nobody warned you about.

School assignment. Buying or leasing near a school you like does not guarantee a seat in it. Wake County's system reassigns, and it is the single most expensive assumption a relocating family can make. Check the address, not the map.
